Wilmington covers a lot of ground. Distance from the water changes the spec

Salt does not stop at the beach. Air off the ocean and the sound carries it well inland, and the further east you live in the county the harder it is on metal. That is why our aluminum carries a SolarShield finish, a powder coat bonded to the metal to hold color and resist corrosion through years of sun and salt, and why we care as much about hinges, latches, and fasteners as we do about panels. Vinyl sidesteps corrosion entirely, and PrivacyLock panels give a solid line that never needs paint. Wood remains the right answer on plenty of Wilmington properties, particularly in the older neighborhoods where it suits the architecture, as long as you go in knowing it will gray faster here than it would somewhere dry.

Sand drains fast and holds posts loosely

Local soil is sandy, which is good news after a heavy rain and bad news for a post. Sand gives a post far less lateral grip than heavier ground, so the footing has to make up the difference in both depth and diameter, set in concrete, sized for the fence it is carrying. Uplift matters here as much as racking. Get the footing right and the fence stays plumb through a bad season. Get it wrong and the first tropical system finds the weak post and shows you where it was.

Privacy or wind, chosen honestly

Shadowbox and spaced-picket builds let air pass through the fence line, which is the single biggest reason one fence comes through a storm and the one next door does not. Shadowbox also looks the same from both sides, which settles a lot of neighbor conversations before they start. If you want a fully solid privacy line anyway, that is a legitimate choice on an interior lot with houses around it breaking the wind, and we simply build the posts and footings to carry the extra load rather than pretending the wind is not there.

Requirements vary by parcel. City property has its own standards, communities like Landfall, Mayfaire, and Autumn Hall run their own architectural review, and work close to the water can fall under state coastal review on top of everything else.
