The grid of streets around the waterfront is walkable and shaded, the Old Yacht Basin still works as a harbor, and the ferry to Fort Fisher runs from the end of town. The other coastal reality is wind load, and Southport is exposed to it. Solid privacy panels catch the wind like a sail. Spaced pickets and shadowbox let it pass. That trade-off is worth thinking through honestly, because the fence that survives is usually the one designed for the site rather than the one that looked best in a catalog. Sandy soil is part of the same calculation. It drains beautifully, which is a genuine advantage, but it gives posts less lateral grip, so footing depth and diameter carry more of the load here than they would somewhere with heavier ground.
