Winnabow Fence Installation

Winnabow is the stretch of Brunswick County between Leland and the middle of the county, and it has stayed rural while the towns on either side of it filled in. Properties here run to acreage, driveways are long, and neighbors are far enough apart that nobody is fencing for privacy from the house next door. What people fence for out here is containment, a defined property line, dogs, gardens, and a decent entrance at the road.

What acreage actually needs

The first thing we sort out on a large lot is which sections need what. It is rarely one fence. A typical Winnabow property might want welded wire or field fence around the back and side lines where the job is containment, a wood or board run along the frontage where the property presents to the road, and a gate at the driveway. Splitting the job that way is how the numbers stay sane, because the cost difference per foot between wire and a finished wood fence is substantial once the run gets long. Wooded lots and the fence line

A lot of land through here toward NC 133 and the river is wooded, and clearing is part of the conversation. We only need the fence line itself opened up, generally a narrow corridor, and that clearing can go into the quote. What we do not do is take out a mature tree that has been there for a century when the fence can jog around it, and where roots run through the line we hand-dig rather than auger through them. The site walk is where all of that gets decided, and it is worth doing before anything is priced.

Sandy soil, storm wind, and the water table

The ground here drains fast, which is genuinely good for a fence, because water is not standing in the footings. The catch is that sand gives a post less to push back against, and storm wind coming through this part of the state pushes hard. On an open run with no tree cover upwind, footing depth and diameter carry the load, so we size them to the exposure rather than to a rule of thumb. The other thing about low, flat land laced with creeks and swampy bottoms is that portions of a property will hold water long after a rain. We find those on the walk and plan the posts around them.
