Longwood is about as far west as Brunswick County goes, out on NC 904 in the farm country that runs up to the South Carolina line. It is a scattering of properties rather than a town center, the parcels are large, and the land is a mix of open field, planted timber, and low ground that drains toward the creeks and swamp bottoms in this corner of the county. A gate wide enough for the equipment you actually own, hung on posts sized for the leaf, is worth more to you over ten years than a slightly heavier gauge of wire along a back line nobody touches.

Sandy soil, wet bottoms, and wind

The ground here drains fast in most places, which keeps standing water away from footings, and that is a real advantage. The trade is that sandy soil does not grip a post against sideways load, and sideways load is what wind delivers. Western Brunswick still catches the wind from systems that come ashore on the coast, and across open field there is nothing to slow it. So footings get sized to the run and the exposure, not to a default. Where the ground turns low and stays wet after a storm, we adjust the setting again.
