Ash Fence Installation

Ash is a small farm community in the western part of Brunswick County, out where NC 130 runs toward the Columbus County line and the South Carolina line is a short drive away. There are no subdivisions to speak of and no beach traffic. What there is instead is field, timber, and long stretches of road with a house set well back from it, and the fencing that goes with that kind of land.

The fence has a job

Out here a fence is almost always functional first. Livestock containment, keeping dogs on the property, securing equipment and a shop yard, and putting an unarguable line on a boundary that runs through woods. Field and farm fence handles most of it, because wire on treated posts covers the distance at a cost that makes fencing real acreage possible. Chain link handles the working yard around a shop or a kennel run, where you want something that shrugs off abuse. Board and wood fence goes where the property presents itself, generally along the road and around the house.

Long runs are about the site walk

The single biggest factor in what a large fence costs is not the material. It is what the line crosses. A run across clean open field is straightforward. The same footage through a tree line, over a grade change, across a wet bottom, or with a half-dozen corners and gates in it is a different project entirely. We walk the full line before quoting, mark the corners, and flag the sections that will need brush clearing. That is also when we settle where the gates go, because a gate in the wrong spot costs you time every day for as long as you own the place.

Sand, sun, and storm wind

The soil out here drains fast, which keeps water away from the footings, but sandy ground does not hold a post against sideways force the way heavier soil does. Wind is the load that matters, and western Brunswick still gets the tail of the tropical systems that come ashore to the east. On open farmland there is nothing upwind to break it. That is why post depth and diameter get sized to the exposure of the run, and why we build corner and gate posts heavier than the line posts rather than treating every post the same. The other constant here is humidity and UV, which is hard on wood, hard on plain steel, and the reason galvanized components and treated posts pay for themselves.
