Sunset Beach is the last barrier island before the South Carolina line, and it stayed low-key while other beach towns did not. There is one bridge on and off, the island is small enough to walk end to end, and the west end runs out toward the Bird Island reserve where development stops entirely. The people who buy here tend to want the view and the quiet, which shapes what they ask a fence to do. Very few of these projects are about hiding from a neighbor.

What the site tells us before you do

Two things decide the build here. The first is which side of the waterway you are on, because the island and the mainland behind it are genuinely different environments. The second is what the lot faces. A lot with open exposure to the water takes wind and salt on that side and almost nothing on the other, so we do not spec the whole perimeter as if it were one condition. Post spacing tightens where the load is, hardware gets upgraded where the spray reaches, and the sheltered runs can be built more economically.

Wind, sand, and the shape of the fence

Sandy soil drains fast, which is why standing water rarely rots out a footing here. The cost is grip. A post set in sand has less to push back against when wind racks the panels or tries to lift the whole assembly, so the footing has to do more work. That is also the reason open-style fencing is so common on the island. Air moves through spaced pickets and ornamental aluminum instead of loading them up, and a fence that lets the wind through is a fence that is still there afterward. Solid privacy has its place on the sheltered mainland lots, and we will build it on the island too, but only with footings and spacing sized for the sail it becomes.

Low maintenance is not a preference here, it is the point
