Calabash is best known for a style of fried seafood and for the boats that still tie up along the Calabash River behind the restaurants. It is a small town by any measure, sitting close enough to the South Carolina line that plenty of residents cross it for errands. What has grown around it is a ring of golf and retirement communities off NC 179, and between the working waterfront and those neighborhoods you get two distinct kinds of fence customer in the same ZIP code.

The association is usually the first conversation

If you are in one of the golf communities, what you can build is largely settled before we arrive. Those associations tend to care about height, color, material, and whether the fence interrupts a sight line across the course or the common area, and they want to see a plan before anything goes in the ground. That rules out cheap fasteners and bare steel components, and it moves most of our work here toward vinyl and aluminum. Vinyl has nothing in it to corrode and gives you a solid privacy line with PrivacyLock panels and StayStrong pickets. Aluminum with a SolarShield finish is what goes along the open sides where you want the boundary without losing the view. Wood is still an option, and it still looks right on the older lots, but a HeartWood finish is worth the money here because sun and humidity turn untreated wood gray in short order.

Storm wind and low ground

The last two factors are wind and elevation. This part of the county is low and flat, water sits after a heavy rain rather than running off, and the whole coast is exposed to tropical systems. Sandy soil drains fast but grips a post poorly, so footing depth and diameter do more of the work than they would inland. And a solid privacy panel is a sail. Spaced pickets and shadowbox let wind pass through, which is the practical reason so many fences here are open-style.
